Workshops

Otakon.online offers a variety of workshops where you can learn to do yoga, dance, or complete a variety of crafts from painting to pepakura to making a raygun.  

Each of the crafting workshops will require different supplies for you to participate.  Please click on the workshop name below to find the supplies you will need to do the craft alongside the presenter, should you so wish!

  1. A printed copy of one papercraft pattern, ideally printed on paper of a weight of 28-32 lbs (105-120gsm) though normal printer paper can work.  Patterns can be found here.
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue (not a washable glue or a gluestick).

  1. Some sort of yarn or string
    1. Yarn in the hair color of your choice (can use more than one color/type)
    2. Yarn/string for hanging up your project, if you’d like a different kind
  2. A base for hanging your mobile - this can be a wooden rod, hoop, stick, or similar object. (Recommended but not required.)
  3. Scissors
  4. Objects for your mobile or wall hanging (OPTIONAL)
  5. One or two paper bags (or) paper lunch bags (or) brown packing paper
  6. Paintbrush
  7. Cup of water and paper towel, if you’re using different colors of paint
  8. White paper
  9. Pencil
    1. Colored pencils/crayons/markers for coloring in the eyes
  10. Glue stick (or hot glue/glue gun, if you have it)
  11. Bottle of white glue
  12. Thin cardboard (e.g. from a cereal box)
  13. Paper egg carton (OR) cardboard roll (OR) more thin cardboard 
  14. Circular hole punch (smaller is better, if possible)
  15. Newspaper, for protecting your work area
  16. Acrylic paints (2 oz. bottle craft paints are fine, can be bought from most big-box stores - careful, these are permanent! I recommend brands like FolkArt over the cheaper paints because you don’t usually need as many layers, but use what’s best for you.)
    1. One bottle for the color of your yokai’s body (or several, if you’re using different colors)
    2. One bottle for the yokai’s beak (I use yellow)
       
  1. Rocks (preferably Smooth River Rocks) 
  2. Acrylic paint
  3. Brushes
  4. Cup of Water for cleaning brushes
  1. Paper
  2. Something to draw with (pen, pencil, marker)
     
  1. Tshirt
  2. 1 sheet craft foam
  3. 1 sheet clear plastic vinyl
  4. decorative fabric
  5. drawstring OR shoelace cord
  6. scissors
  7. a ruler
  8. a pen
  9. two safety pins
  10. stapler (with staples)
  11. hot glue OR fabric glue
  12. ribbons, trim, beads, and any other decorative items

  1. Something to paint on (canvas, paper, or other)
  2. A electronic or physical copy of the Totoro picture [LINK TO: image attached of Totoro on a branch]
  3. If you are not comfortable drawing this image free hand to paint, you will need carbon paper sized to your painting surface, and a printout of the picture the same size
  4. acrylic paints (black, white, blue, red, yellow)
  5. plastic or disposable plate to mix paints on
  6. pencil or pen to lightly sketch the picture.
  7. fairly wide brush (for filling in the background), 3 medium round brushes, 5 or more small brushes (the more brushes you have have, wide/medium round/small, the more options you have for paint)
     
  1. Polymer Clay (Sculpey III recommended) in the following colors
    1. At least 3 colors of your choice 
    2. Glow in the dark 
    3. Transparent
  2. Jewelry Eye Pins
  3. Necklace Cord: (pull apart for kids) (clamped necklace)
  4. Jump Rings 
  5. Wood Pick (Tool for carving)
     

Adult supervision recommended.
 
Supplies:

  1. Base toy gun (water guns recommend)
  2. Paint, paint markers.
  3. Screws, Wire, Pipe, misc other things as decoration (find what you like).

 
Tools for Ray Guns will be:

  1. Drill
  2. Screwdrivers
  3. Pliers
  4. Wire cutters
  5. Glue/Hot Glue (optional)
