Volunteering: Interpretation

Interpreters Needed!

Otakon is beginning the process of expanding its Interpretation Department, and we are searching for 2-3 pleasant, mature, and competent volunteers to work as escort interpreters for Japanese guests at Otakon 2008. We're seeking not only experienced linguistics professionals such as Japanese language teachers and translators, but also those interested in gaining hands-on experience as interpreters, and familiarity with anime and manga is not required.

Responsibilities:

As an escort interpreter, one's duty will be to escort the Japanese guests during their stay at Otakon and interpret for them whenever needed.

One's work will involve but not be limited to such activities as:

  • Accompanying one's assigned guest out to meals.
  • Taking him or her shopping.
  • Taking him or her sight-seeing.
  • Individual interpretation for the guest during autograph sessions.
  • Other work as need arises.

Hours can be rather long, but it's almost always a lot of fun.

Qualifications:

Fluency in both Japanese and English is essential, as are the ability to work in a team-oriented environment and a calm, friendly personality. Previous experience with Japanese-English interpretation and native knowledge of Japanese are bonuses but are by no means a requirement.

If you are interested, complete the Interpreter Application Form.

You'll also want to prepare the following items:

  • A simple resumé or Curriculum Vitae.
  • A brief statement, no longer than half a page, describing your interests in this position and the Japanese language.
